How to dominate conversations even if you have social anxiety

//THREAD//
It's vital to be able to talk to people in social situations

I'm not a great example of this, but its something I'm getting better at

Here's how I've begun to overcome the racing thoughts and sweating palms
1. Most importantly, be yourself

Don't try to be something you're not

Never lie and always say exactly what you want
If you know nothing of the subject being discussed

Simply ask questions to gain further insight into someone's interests
2. Realize anxiety is simply just a feeling

And accept it for that, a feeling

It can't kill you
Be conscious that you're surrounded by people just as nervous as you

They may just be more comfortable in that state of mind than you are
3. Try to maintain eye contact, but don't be creepy about it

It's OK to look at their hands if they make gestures or at their body language

Definitely, DO NOT stare at the floor like I used to

They will think you've lost interest
4. Embrace the silences

This is a good time to reflect on what's been said and think about what to say next

There doesn't always have to be someone talking the whole conversation
5. Know that anxiety is a sign that you're doing something important

Even having a simple conversation with someone you don't know

You're developing your communication skills
6. You can dictate a conversation with a carefully worded and timed question

If a conversation is heading in a negative direction, such as someone criticizing a co-worker

Insert a question such as "What they would like the co-worker to change"
7. Have more face to face conversations

This is the only true way to practice your communication

And learn to overcome your stressors
