Restaurants that laid people off right at the beginning of the pandemic that are now ramping up hiring and not realizing that people don't want to be abandoned again. Also, lots of service workers died. Please attach that comment to any worker shortage story.
Also, during recessions restaurants were fall back plans for people out of jobs. During the last recession people left real estate jobs and got jobs in restaurants as FOH/bartenders. They were safe, for the most part. Now? Not at all. Why go there? No reason to.
You would be better off: being a third party delivery driver, working at a warehouse, being independent and doing side gigs, training in another industry, etc..... People have more options and coming back to a restaurant cesspool isn't attractive.
The only people right now that are attracted to restaurants right now are owners/investors, chefs that have skin in the game at their restaurants, and any auxiliary people leaching money from those restaurants. The workers? Fuck that noise.
"competitive wages" stop saying that shit. Just say what the wage is. Competitive in this industry or competitive in the world of options out there? You pay $30 for people? Congrats. If they go to a different industry they can probably get $35 and weekends off doing 9-5.
For the owners and investors and cool chefs that don't get it I offer you some advice that you have given to your workers that never accomplished anything. Work harder. Figure it out. You got this.
Restaurants figured out a way to ditch their staff, do take out, have third party delivery apps function as their FOH, and still run business. Now they want to hire people back to dine-in. Hey, dip shit, you proved you don't need those employees right in front of their faces.
And now, they want to hire people back at wages that are the same and/or less considering occupancy rates. Less occupancy means less hours, less tips, less everything for the worker. Fuck yeah, sign me up for that nonsense. Time to learn how to flip out stations owner peeps.
So when you see people perpetuating the where are the workers talking points just know that they are shit at their jobs and are just PR for lobbyists like @WeRRestaurants that look out for owners over workers, like they alwar have. You can all fucking rot.
Shout out to the industry peeps here thinking that people have been waiting a year to travel to.... Seattle. Hahahah this place is so boring! Unless you like the outdoors or knows someone here it's a two day trip max until you're bored as shit. People are going big if they travel
Remember when everyone got laid off, flooded the unemployment system, they crashed, people went weeks/months with nothing, and restaurants were running still? Yeah, sounds awesome, back to work!
If you are looking for a job then go check that PPP list to see how much money they received and in the interview ask them if they received the restaurant revitalization fund as well. Guaranteed they can pay you more but they won't.
Here's another question to ask possible employers. Do you prioritize guests actions over employee safety? If they get out of line and don't follow the rules of the restaurant what happens? 86 them or I just have to smile and take it?
Pay attention to third party apps, people that sell things to restaurants, and any other people pushing for things to go back to normal. They are the ones amplifying revenue/profits over the workers that are still in harm's way. Pandemic isn't over dumb dumbs, we see you.
When it comes to owners/investors/big name chefs don't feel sorry for them or what they're going through to find people. They fucked around and now they are finding out. The PR machine is doing their best to polish the gigantic turd they left in the toilet that they can't fix.
Here's some hype music for you restaurant owner peeps hoping and waiting for the impossible dream instead of rocking that jacket and putting those dishes away.
Oh, and if you want to see how batshit the industry is check out the NYC Michelin guide. All of those restaurants laid off people with zero fucks. All were rewarded, for being closed!!!!
How many mediocre restaurants are there that were doing mediocre shit before this pandemic? So many. Now they want people to go back? The shit wasn't seasoned and you took advantage of just being a place and I was hungry at the time. Not going back...... You don't deserve a dime.
How do you come back from this? One person can't. The other is being rewarded for it.
In the earnings reports of publicly traded restaurants did they report on how many of their employees got sick and/or died this past year from covid? Setting that standard is why it's easy for them to flip the switch and beg for employees to come back without repercussions.
If the food media there needs to be more people that report about covid that are like the people that are most affected by it. More Black and Brown writers. Otherwise, it's just gaslighting and PR stunts because they won't know how to find or talk to those people otherwise.
Just two dudes that have no clue how to pay people or take responsibility for a business model that can do that. Look at the fucking smiles. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/06/small-businesses-struggle-to-find-workers-as-pandemic-eases.html
