Here is what I think should happen re: covid in the US on June 1. Everybody will have had a chance to be vaccinated by then. So:
1) Lift all remaining restrictions
2) Mandate vaccines for those who work around children and those who live or work in congregate living environments
Local businesses can voluntarily continue mitigation practices on site. But they should not be required to do so after June 1. And obviously, people should continue to mask/distance if they feel comfortable doing so. But it should not be mandated after June 1.
I hope the full FDA approval for the vaccine comes soon so the "Emergency Use" excuse will no longer hold back vaccine mandates for universities, teachers, health care and LTC workers.
It's time to think of the pandemic end game. The virus will continue endemically. But with the vaccinated, it will be nothing more than a nuisance. Those who are still unvaccinated will have to choose at that point since they'll be bright shining targets for the virus.
BTW, if you want to know why I am confident we can get life back to normal soon, check out how effective the vaccines are. Out of 87 million fully vaccinated people, there were only 5,087 symptomatic breakthrough cases. https://twitter.com/MonicaGandhi9/status/1386391476108599298?s=20
Hospitalization and death even less likely. All infections (symptomatic or not) cut down dramatically so very little chance that fully vaccinated people will get infected and then transmit it to others, including children.
