Reminder/Repost now that the Sun is shining in the Northern Hemisphere. And it is nice to go outside and make some Vit D. Go out. Skip the Supplements. Soak up the Sun. Remember 15 minutes is enough to make plenty of Vit D. https://eatplayfit.com/health-benefits-vitamin-d/">https://eatplayfit.com/health-be...
The many health benefits of Vitamin D keeps showing up with every new study, So I wanted to summarize this in a few posts. This is the first one of many.
Is this the Panacea?
Panacea ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panacea )comes">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pana... from a Greek word meaning "all-healing". Panacea was the Greek goddess of healing. In the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, alchemists sought to concoct the "elixir of life". Elixir of Life would give you eternal life.
And "philosopher& #39;s stone" - which would turn ordinary metals into gold. They also tried to formulate the Panacea. I am not quite sure if they succeeded.
Ok. Ok. I know, a few days ago I called the Black Seeds a Panacea. And I almost believe that this is right up there with the Black Seeds, and perhaps more scientific research to back it up.
If there is only one Vitamin you want to actively seek whether from spending time outside in the sun or supplementing, it should be Vitamin D.
Also knowing that the COVID-19 is here to stay, it makes more sense to keep the immunity up and be ready to ward off any infections you may get.
There is a method to my weight-loss nutrition. If I tell you to go out and take a walk, and get some sunshine on your bare skin it is to get your Vitamin D dose in.
If I tell you to supplement your Vitamin D, there is a reason behind it (and a whole bunch of research goes into it). But hey I have done the research and writing about it here, so you do not have to re-invent the wheel.
So, What exactly are the health benefits of Vitamin D and Why should I care?
Bone and Muscle Health
According to this study ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3356951/),">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic... Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium, and phosphorus, and keeps your bone strong. Vitamin D also increases muscle strength. Vitamin D deficiency causes increased risks of fractures and falls.
Vitamin D deficiency in children could also cause skeletal deformities called Rickets.
Cancer
Vitamin D decreases cell proliferation and increases cell differentiation.
This stops the growth of new blood vessels and has anti-inflammatory effects. [check this study ( #ref71">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3356951/ #ref71),">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic... and this ( #ref72">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3356951/ #ref72)">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic... if you want to learn more] Many studies have suggested a link between low vitamin D levels and an increased risk of…
…cancer, especially colorectal cancer.
According to this study ( #ref71">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3356951/ #ref71),">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic... subjects with high vitamin D concentrations were half as likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer as those with low concentrations.

Heart Disease
Framingham Heart study ( #ref17">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3356951/ #ref17)">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic... found that patients with low vitamin D levels had a 60% higher risk of heart disease than those with higher concentrations.
In another study ( #ref73">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3356951/ #ref73),">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic... which followed men and women for 4 years, patients with low vitamin D concentrations (<15 ng/mL) were three times more likely to be diagnosed with hypertension than those with high concentrations (>30 ng/mL).
Obesity
Low levels of Vit D is also correlated with Obesity and bad heart health. Higher levels of Vit D were also correlated to lean body mass, good heart health and smaller waist circumference.

Type 2 diabetes
Vitamin D supplementation helps manage your blood glucose levels.
As shown by this three-year-long trial ( #ref90">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3356951/ #ref90)">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic... of nondiabetic patients aged 65 years and older found that those who received 700 IU of vitamin D (plus calcium) had a smaller rise in fasting plasma glucose versus those who received placebo.
Immunity against COVID19 and Flu viruses
Study after study has shown that Vit D has been found helpful to reduce the severity of SARS-COV2 infection.
I am only citing this one study ( https://poseidon01.ssrn.com/delivery.php?ID=234103074096006114125119118027126117039063081059035051122103003119057026018029127070031037087092078088073005120079112122067029080036091082049013031093077117083073010001101011023083067004084005053117037089071026087091092090083071116067101101116019097091003003096123088098086125007073090090002&EXT=pdf&INDEX=TRUE)">https://poseidon01.ssrn.com/delivery.... that shows that Vitamin D (calcifediol) supplement administered at hospitalization reduced the requirement for ICU admission and decreased mortality by more than 50% in Patients.
In simple language - If you test positive for COVID 19, get adequate vitamin D as soon as possible to reduce the severity.
I need to do part 2 of this post because I want to mention many more Vit D benefits that are not listed here.

Over half of the world& #39;s population is deficient in Vit. D. This may be easily attributable to reduced outdoor activities and environmental pollution. Sometimes seasonal deficiencies causing reduced exposure to sunlight.
The ultraviolet-B (UVB) in the Sunlight helps with vitamin D production in the skin.
The point is that vitamin D deficiency is frequent but easily correctable. Spend 10 minutes outside in the sunshine. If that& #39;s not doable then just get a supplement. And remember to take it once daily.
