The SECRET to building muscle that fitness gurus don’t tell you.

[THREAD]
Most beginners are struggling to work on the proper exercises ... because they’re not sexy.

What do I mean?

Every exercise you see on YouTube or Instagram is sexy.

One rep maxes, bicep veins from curling, and six pack abs from core exercises.
Although they’re all sexy exercises to choose from, they aren’t the only ones to choose from for building muscle.

Have you ever heard of the term “compound movements?”

Compound movements (or exercises) are multi-joint exercises.
This means that when you perform a compound movement, you’re moving two joints.

For example, a squat.

A squat utilizes your knees and your hips.

This activates a ton of muscles in your body, compared to non-compound exercises, or isolation work.
Isolation exercises target one specific muscle group, for example, a tricep pushdown.

You’re primarily working the bicep in this movement, and only moving one joint (the elbow).

Now if you’re a beginner, what should you choose from?
As a beginner, your sole focus is on building as much muscle as possible.

Because you’ve probably never consistently lifted before, you haven’t built a lot of muscle ...

Meaning it’s in your best interest to choose exercises that BUILD A TON OF MUSCLE 💪
So what exercises do we choose from?

You’ve probably heard of them before ... COMPOUNDS!

Squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, pull-ups, rows, etc.

Think of all these exercises and how they use multiple joints (in fact ... you can probably brainstorm more!)
This is the meat and potatoes of your workout.

Why? Because you are:
- activating multiple muscles
- saving time by working on multiple things at once
- getting stronger as quickly as possible

They’re your main course, while isolation exercises are your sides/dessert.
Then what are isolation exercises for?

Isolation work is targeted towards your weaknesses.

After you train for a while on compounds, you can find weaknesses to improve on.

For example:

If my bench press is weak at the top of the lock out, it means I have weak triceps.
Therefore, I will work on tricep extensions, skullcrushers, or other forms of isolation exercises to strengthen that weakness.

With that being said, you can understand why beginners should start out with compound exercises.

Because ...

You don’t know your weaknesses.
To be frank, everything is your weakness.

And because you’ve got so little muscle on your body, the goal is to build muscle EVERYWHERE 😳

Now I’m not telling you to NOT perform isolation exercises, because you should.
Isolation exercises like bicep curls and tricep extensions have their place but should be after your compounds.

Focus on the meat and potatoes first, then you can enjoy your sides and dessert later.
