Why we are fat and why the diet wars are a stupid waste of time: a thread with graphs
We eat too much sugar, too many carbs, too much fat, and way too much highly processed food. It all ads up to gross overconsumption, period.
But, the highly processed food is the driver

We are consuming close to 900 extra calories per day since 1960, but extra calories in the form of what?
A lot more vegetable oil. 2.50 x as much veg oil since 1960. This is significant because:
1. it is devoid of micronutrients. These oils are largely added, empty calories
2.) this could be a proxy for ultra processed foods since veg oils are ubiquitous in UPF

Corroborating the increased consumption of veg oil as a proxy for UPF, Americans spend 61% of their food money on calories/dietary energy from ultra processed foods

UPF consumption has risen steadily along with the obesity epidemic. This is a problem because UPF don& #39;t trigger satiety the way normal, whole foods seem to.
This was shown in the following study where people ate 500+ calories more a day when give an ultra processed food diet

It doesn& #39;t help that highly processed foods are cheap to manufacture and have very long shelf lives. Good traits when trying to get sustenance to starving people, but not so good when food manufacturers exploit these in the name of maximum profitability.
Foods that are super cheap to manufacture, that don& #39;t trigger satiety...that you cant help but eat to excess...which are good on a shelf for years...which are generally very low in micronutrients, are mostly empty calories, and are on damn near every street corner in America
We aren& #39;t fat and sick from too many carbs, or too much meat, or too much sugar... we are fat and sick from eating too much of all of it in the form of highly processed foods.
Humans have thrived the world over eating a wide range of whole plant and animal foods

From mostly meat and few plants to mostly plants and much less meat, all while largely exhibiting robust health for thousands of years
The obesity epidemic is a very recent construct... just like the increasing amounts of ultra processed food consumption.

The best diet for you is the one that allows you to feel your best while achieving the highest satiety. This is done with whole foods.
The WF diet that works best for me is low carb high protein. For my wife its high pro, higher carb, lower fat

It seems some people are able to work UPF into their diets while not overeating them, using moderation and counting calories.
This seems like a terrible idea for the avg American since this is asking them to use will power to not overeat UPF that are deigned to bypass satiety

There are no overfat/obese populations eating a diet of whole foods.
Its an overconsumption problem facilitated by the production and proliferation of high profit margin bullshit ultra processed food.

People eating whole foods diets arguing with other people eating different whole food diets over which whole food diet is the right diet for everybody is an epic case of missing the forest for a tree.
