Has this past 4 years been hard on you as a disabled person? I know for me, @nolan_syreeta, living as a Black, Disabled, bisexual woman in the midst of a President who openly mocked disabled, allowed white supremacy & ignored a pandemic was terrifying. If you want to share 1/
your story with us, feel free to reply to this thread or DM us & we can place your reply to this thread anonymously. Your #MentalHealth matters in #disability. As a person #DisInHigherEd, my #AcademicMentalHealth has to matter to me because my mental health only matters to my 2/
institution because I am Black. I can go into healing spaces and safe spaces that they set up for Black students and staff. Why don't I get a safe space or a healing space? Accommodations and accessibility are great in the classroom, but I am disabled outside of the classroom 3/
too. I am a proud Disabled woman & there is no space in higher education for that to be a reality. The social model of disability doesn't exist to them. Only the medical model that makes my disability out to be a liability. My disabilities have unlocked capabilities within me 4/
and I don't think that they believe it. I speak because these words need to be said and we need to stand up for each other, but first we must stand up for ourselves. We are no good to anyone else, if we are not first good to ourselves in the ways we can be. When my spoons run 5/
out, I don't push through anymore. I sleep & I request accommodations for the sleep I needed. When I am overwhelmed, I step away from the computer and relax with one of my favorite shows. I try to eat regularly, even though I forget sometimes. I try not to let my internalized 6/
ableism tell me what I should do and I honor myself in the best ways that I can. That is what I have tried to model for myself over the past 4 years. I still have my good and bad moments, but that is how PTSD is for me in addition to Fibromyalgia. What is your story?
