the government needs to give direct support to the service industry
the government needs to give direct support to small business
the government needs to give money to those who cannot outlast this, not the chains and mega corps that can. This is a huge wealth transfer from the middle class to the rich, and exploiting the lower class “essentials”
the government needs to open the fucking purse and the people need to stop acting like government debt is analogous to household debt
in closing, the government needs to provide direct support to the industries currently being decimated but the very people demanding we stay inside so we don’t kill grandma are the ones refusing to pay businesses to stay home so they don’t kill grandma
alternatively, everyone’s gotta get really cool with the idea of competition just meaning “you have the choice of product from this cabal of mega-corps that are virtually indistinguishable from each other except for branding”
or we gotta get really cool with killing off an entire generation of people
so you’re left with three choices:
• provide direct support to the service industry
• allow for the slow chokehold of oligopoly
• kill grandma and endanger a guy making $2.53 an hour
all other arguments are extraneous. The cost? Fine. The bill can be squabbled about later. You still agree we should be giving money. Quit virtue signaling and be thankful it isn’t you needing the money. Killing grandma is good? I mean yes, but hazard pay for public workers when?
And if you’re not willing to give those people hazard pay, I reckon you should volunteer to do their job for two weeks while they quarantine. Oh, you don’t want to get sick? Huh, neither do they. Pay people exposed to the public hazard pay!
if your argument is still “but it costs so much!” or some other inane banality on the irresponsibility of government spending: you realize you’re scolding the government and making a point about some abstract idea of power instead of supporting somebody keeping their livelihood?
We bail out industries even when we aren’t in a pandemic. Look how often banks, farmers, oil, airlines have gotten subsidies. they never pay those back. Why is it ok for some abstract organizational concept to get money, but not millions of people? What’s your problem?
Anyway, in closing, get ready for either the Amazon-lead cabal presenting you with the illusion of choice, or an entire generation of the population losing their life. Or we could like, pay the guy making 2.53 an hour and the small biz owner employing him like, a little bit more.
(it isn’t capitalism or a free market environment if the government plays favorites)
