Raising capital
For pre-seed companies an investor is betting on a combination of you + idea + timing.
Generating buzz can help open doors or create FOMO.

Competitive advantage
Building in public shows your playbook. If there are low barriers to entry I would argue stealth is the way to go until you have a product that a group of people love and your focus changes to acquisition.

PR
Most PR buzz (especially trade press like TC) does not lead to thousands of downloads.
I’m a fan of founder story PR vs. company press in the early days. If you drive a bunch of people to a splash page and don’t contact them for 8 months... you won’t convert them.

Social media
Building in public generates SM hype. No question.
I continue to watch companies build loyalists through their SM accounts and the followers feel in at the ground floor.

Social media pt 2
Impression bias is the desensitization after exposure to something over time.
If you don’t have new info or proof points for your audience, they may be “over it” after a while if it’s constant hype over progress.

User Feedback
Building in public may allow you faster access to feedback. I’m a big believer in ship fast vs. trying to launch a “perfect” product.
If you’ve built a community of early supporters, you’ll likely build shorter feedback loops.

Recruiting
By sharing that I’m launching a new company on Twitter I was able to recruit AMAZING talent quickly.
This is definitely made easier when you’ve built a community of supporters.

TL;DR timing & purpose is everything
I believe there is a right time to start the hype.
If your goal is to see your company in a headline then check your OKRs and personal needs. Get real with yourself on the true drivers and adjust accordingly.
