Here's why no one should ever defend crunch
1. Extended overtime doesn't actually lead to an increase in output. Feel free to google it there's a lot of research on the matter.
2.The health consequences of extended overtime are real. Even if you don't care about the well-being, which you should, of the devs this is a huge cause for long-term productivity loss in seniors which is a huge loss.
3. It results in an increased turn over which means you're throwing away money you spent recruiting and training seniors. Which again is a huge loss in quality and productivity.
4. Almost every single project with Crunch I've seen or heard about is caused by bad leadership. The main causes are A. Poor planning B. Commitment to bad tech with poor productivity C. Capricious and flippant direction
5. It also reinforced bad managers and directors. Because they don't see the consequences of their bad calls they think they're doing a good job even though they're burning through their team.
So to sum up crunch isn't productive, it harms devs, its financially stupid for the company, and caused by poor leadership. Don't support this shit, make leadership accountable.
