Here is an example of ME misreading a situation, but in my defense, I was in second grade, not a 20 y/o man who almost graduated from high school.
I know that what happened was wrong, but also that the school likely meant well and just Canadianed their way through.
So, on the first day of Grade 2, the principal and the Grade 1 teacher came in and told us, sadly, that there weren’t enough chairs in Grade 2.
So they had “drawn some names out of a hat” and the following three kids would get to do Grade 1 again, BUT would have the privilege of using Grade 2 cubbies.

None of us batted an eye at this.
I think I was a teenager before I realized that was their way of explaining “these kids need to do a victory lap of Grade 1 but let’s do it in such a way that the other kids don’t catch on.”
I ASSUME the school had told the parents months before and everyone was prepared.
And we never figured it out! Through all of grade school, we were just “too bad they didn’t have enough chairs in Grade 2, Jessica K was really fun.”
