Understanding Body Dysmorphia: a thread.
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), or body dysmorphia, is a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about defects or flaws in their appearance. People with BDD often have a distorted body image, seeing themselves as ugly or disfigured.
These flaws are often minor and unnoticeable to others. When you have BDD, you intensely focus on your body image, constantly checking mirrors for many hours of the day or avoiding mirrors all together. Your perceived flaws can cause daily distress, and negative thoughts.
Preoccupation with your appearance and excessive thoughts can be unwanted, difficult to control and so time-consuming that they can cause problems in your social life, work, school or other areas of functioning.
The cause of BDD is unknown. However like other mental health conditions, it is linked to genes, chemicals changes in the brain, traumatic past experiences and negative evaluations about your self-image.
Having body dysmorphic disorder can lead to depression, self-harm and even suicidal thoughts. Treatment of BDD may include cognitive behavioral therapy and medication.
Symptoms of Body Dysmorphic Disorder could include:

-Being preoccupied with a certain flaw that is minor or can’t be seen by others
-Strong belief that you have a defect in your appearance that makes you ugly
-Attempting to hide flaws with makeup or clothes
-Constantly spending time comparing your appearance to others
-Seeking reassurance about your body image from others
-Seeking cosmetic procedures with little satisfaction
-Avoiding Social situations
Shame and embarrassment about your appearance could make one reluctant to seek help. Speaking to a doctor or mental health specialist can be beneficial in the long run!
