This live version of kd lang’s cover of Jane Siberry’s “Love Is Everything” is an all-timer and you gotta let it build:
There are so few full albums that are wall-to-wall perfect like kd lang’s “Hymns of the 49th Parallel” and she also does Neil Young’s “Helpless” on it (my personal anthem). Here it is, but live, and she goes straight into “Simple” after:
My dad loved the Jane Siberry original of “Love Is Everything” and played the album a lot and I remember being a young teen listening to it like “oh wow love is gonna SUCK but I want it SO MUCH.” I think kd lang’s is better but the LYRICS!
everyone is entitled to have their preferred version of “Bird on The Wire” but mine’s kd lang:
Someone asked Leonard Cohen why he didn’t perform “Bird on a Wire” anymore and he said that “But I swear by this song / And by all that I have done wrong / I will make it all up to thee” is a real bitch when you didn’t actually follow through and barely remember the woman now.
I also love Jennifer Warnes’ album of Leonard Cohen covers SO much and more people should listen to it, it’s called “Famous Blue Raincoat” and he actually duets with her on “Joan of Arc” and it! is! perfect!
It’s such a perfect album and it was her only album that charted.

Everyone just remembers her from her famous movie duets: “Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong” w Joe Cocker in “An Officer and a Gentleman”, and “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” w Bill Medley in “Dirty Dancing.”
(That’s still a great legacy! She has Grammy awards! She’s fine! But you’re missing out if you skip “Famous Blue Raincoat,” on which she does an incredible cover of “First We Take Manhattan,” which is a great song to listen to right now.)
