So, I told you this story about two years ago and cannot name and shame the culprit bc he is notoriously litigious and also well-known.

I have a family friend who in the 1970s was being treated by a psychoanalyst. Great listener. Told him things she had never told anyone.

My friend went to a party in Toronto and was making idle chitchat with a stranger, and a few minutes in, they exchanged full names.

The dude she had been chatting with said “oh, so YOU’RE the one who...” and proceeded to list all of her personal dysfunctions, fears, regrets, horrors, and intimate details of her sex life.

Because APPARENTLY her psychoanalyst, who was also a professor, amused himself by just...telling everyone stories about his patients, with their ACTUAL NAMES INCLUDED.

She reported it immediately to the relevant board, who did nothing, and then he sent her a very scary and litigious letter and she decided to just try never to think of it again and it was about ten years before she could trust any therapist again.

He went on to become even more famous (it’s not Doctor Phil, people have asked) within the intelligentsia and has sued many people and is now an animal rights activist.

He is currently also a professor in New Zealand.

My friend has a stunning head of snow-white hair and wrote a best-selling memoir and is happily married but obviously will never, ever, ever forgive or forget.

She is herself a very good psychotherapist. She doesn’t tell patient stories, period.
