The psychology behind self-motivation:

Motivating yourself when you have ADHD is tough.

Understanding the psychology behind self-motivation has helped me reframe tasks into ones that I actually WANT to do.

THREAD...
1/ ADHD & Motivation
Studies have shown that ADHD is correlated with a disruption in dopamine reward pathways.

Both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards lead to lower levels of motivation for us.

That reward of "good grades" that works for your friend may not work for you.
2/ Disclaimer

You can't overcome chemical imbalances with a few lifehacks.

Make sure you focus on increasing your dopamine levels via medication, exercise, and diet first.

The tips in this thread may not work for you but they've worked quite well for me and my friends.
3/ SDT
Psychologists agree "Self-Determination Theory" (SDT) is the foundation of intrinsic motivation.

Self-Determination lets us feel that we have control over our choices and our lives.

The theory says we're driven by three innate needs: Autonomy, Competency, Relatedness
4/ SDT - Autonomy
The need to feel in control of your own behaviors and goals.

Hacking it:

Avoid tasks that reduce your control. But if you're forced to do a task then create autonomy by approaching it in your own way.
5/ SDT - Competency
The need to gain mastery of tasks and learn different skills

Hacking it:

Reframe tasks as learning exercises for skills that you're interested in. (e.g. Treat a school report as writing practice)
6/ SDT - Relatedness
The need to experience a sense of belonging and attachment to other people.

Hacking it:

I've never done it. My theory is to find purpose by creating a personal mission statement for each area in your life. Focus on your impact on others.

7/ NICUP

Pronounced NICK-UP.
Stands for

- Novelty
- Interest
- Challenge
- Urgency
- Passion

I apply these motivators to tasks in an effort to make them more interesting.
8/ 6 Other Motivation Tips

My favorite:

Track your physical factors (Exercise, Sleep, Diet) and take medication if you can.

It'll help increase your baseline dopamine levels and make self-motivation infinitely easier.

Others include HIIT, Coke Zero, and Cold Showers 😉
