I know I sound like a stuck record sometimes but do yourself a favour. Organise 4 or more friends and do a trip every few weeks to the Joburg Market in City Deep. You'll pay easily about 25% of what you pay for fruit and veg at retailers.

Buy directly from farmers and suppliers
It's where we people in the industry shop for events and big functions.

If you're into flowers or need flowers, Multiflora (the biggest flower market in SA) is located round the corner. You literally buy from the people who supply florists. Dirt cheap. 😉
If you're looking for cassava, plantains, yams, okra, dried tilapia, West & Central African cuisine ingredients etc. The Congolese market on Rocky Street in Yeoville is where you wanna go. Need to be a little street smart but the vendors are friendly and up for negotiations 😉
For Ethiopian cuisine, there's a restaurant in Kensington near Eastgate called "Abyssinia Restaurant". Run by Ethiopians and they serve authentic cuisine from there. Also one in Maboneng near the market. The owner is really cool. If you want proper Injera from Ethiopia. 😉
Really wish the people at Joburg Municipality/Gauteng tourism showcased just how diverse Joburg really is and all the places where one can find things. Our city is an epitome of the diaspora. They need to showcase it more.
If you have a copy of #Dijo, it's not a mistake that Bara is the first image in the book. Bara is the centre of Soweto. The centre of the cuisine we grew up with. Need stuff from Limpopo, MP, KZN, EC, WC etc, you can find it there...or even travel there from Bara. â€ïžđŸ–€
Oh, another thing with Rocky Street, the stores there stock produce, snacks and ingredients from other African countries. Maputi, proper Mazoe etc.
