the reason why “defund the police” is an important slogan is that every other attempt to control police brutality has involved giving huge amounts of money TO THE POLICE
as you could imagine increasing police budgets every time they murder someone has not created a huge disincentive for them to stop murdering people
It’s a bummer that the string of words “defund the police” is not as popular as the string of words “black lives matter” but to reject it based on popularity ignores the concrete reality of the situation AND the fact that three years ago “black lives matter” scared white people
This is the perfect time to connect police brutality to police funding - because a lot of people are broke, or are scrambling to find disinfecting wipes to send to their kids school, or dealing with the thousand other ways our society is falling apart
and when they ask “hey where the fuck did all of my tax dollars go” a very good answer is “to paying all of these guys a bunch of money and then as soon as they were asked to stop killing people they fucked off”
