We should be more concerned and vocal about how brutally people are getting burnt out by remote work right now.
Remote work *can* work in theory, and it's the future.

However, effective remote work doesn't happen magically on its own.

It requires the right set up, especially in terms of social infrastructure and capable management.
Until very recently, remote work was a narrow niche. So, true experts in this space are pretty rare still.

And remote work is not going well for most right now.

(The recent explosion of content in “guide to remote working” – yeahhh, it's mostly noise) https://twitter.com/jenistyping/status/1265139174278959104
Take for example, the many rituals of office life
considered "a waste of time:” watercooler chitchat, shuffling btwn meetings, goofing off.

These micro-breaks and interactions provide an important release from the grind and improve focus & creativity. And it all got wiped away.
The leadership at many companies have been alarmed by decreased productivity levels.

And they're reacting poorly – by imposing even more rigid structures and pressure onto workers.

That's the anecdata I’m hearing from friends/my network, at least. https://twitter.com/jenistyping/status/1271483619572248581
Your team's productivity is down? Instead of panicking, remember that people perform their best in an environment that balance challenge/safety.

2020 has fucked with everyone's sense of safety & stability. So managers have the oppty to do some really good, meaningful work here.
I've been sharing/RT'ing a lot of the content on this, and will continue to do so! In the meantime, take care of yourself and your community 🤍 https://twitter.com/jenistyping/status/1247242895171575808
