How To 10X Your Results

[ THREAD ]

Let's go 👇
Focus On Systems. Not Goals.

This one is inspired by @ScottAdamsSays

Systems let you accumulate a long-string of wins that compound and create value far exceeding your goals.

Let's unpack...
1:

What Are Goals?

Goals are discrete events that happen in the future:

1. Save $1M
2. Lose 50 pounds
3. Deadlift 350 pounds
4. Get a 20% return on this investment

Goals often have deadlines.
2:

What Are Systems?

A system is something you do regularly.

1. Save 20% of your pay
2. Deadlift 2 times a week
3. Eat whole, organic foods
4. Invest in undervalued companies

The act of doing “systems things” directly contributes to your happiness.

What's An Example?

If you’re an entrepreneur...

Your Goal is to build a $1M dollar business.

Your System is how you come up with ideas, execute products, and market your offerings.
4:

The Problem With Goals

Goals put you in a state of near continuous failure.

- If you deadlift 300 pounds, but not 350...
- If you lose 40 pounds, but not 50...
- If you save $900k, but not $1M...

That's great progress.

But you’re a failure based on the goals you set.
Over time, this feeling robs you of motivation.

If you meet the goal, you feel good. For a bit...

But then you’ve lost the thing that gave you purpose.

So you set new goals.

And you re-enter the cycle of inadequacy.

The Benefits Of Systems

"Systems people" see life as an ongoing process.

Instead of seeking to lose 50 pounds...
You fast daily and go to the gym 3x/week

Instead of seeking to make $1M...
You create a business system that surfaces good ideas
Happiness and meaning emerge from the process of following the system.

Most importantly, systems help you escape the "yo-yo" psychology of goals.

This allows you to play the game long-term and continuously improve your odds of success.

You get "luckier" over time.
Conclusion:

Goals are good for setting direction.

But they limit your happiness before you hit your goal. And deplete your motivation once achieve it.

Ultimately, your commitment to your system of continuous improvement determines your success.
That's all friends!
