@DGH_LSHTM & #blacklivesmatter
groups gathered signatures from 100's of staff, students, & alumni calling for leadership to examine the school's past

...listen to personal accounts of discrimination.
These groups have influenced the hiring of a postdoc to research it’s #colonial history & legacy. We wrote about Her findings & the calls for change from #DGH & #BLM groups & hope the leadership will act.

Other global #publichealth universities like @dukedecolonize @KarolinskaDGH @EdinburghUni @DecolonizeGh ( @HarvardChanSPH) have hosted conferences to critically examine & challenge west/white centric curricula

And powerhouses like @AspenInstitute @LSHTM_Crises @Humanit_Health have held discussions that confront how #colonial practices and bigoted assumptions hurt the very people #globalhealth is supposed to help
Thousands of staff from powerful institutions like @MSF, @USAIDGH, @CDCgov, @WHO have called on their leadership to examine racist and colonial practices. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/global-development/2020/jul/10/medecins-sans-frontieres-institutionally-racist-medical-charity-colonialism-white-supremacy-msf
More #globalsouth voices are articulating the damage of silencing local experts and shipping in western approaches for everything from #familyplanning to #outbreakresponse .

Global health giants that have been overlooked for decades now are rightly being represented for the part they played in scientific discovery! My fave is Dr Jean Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum—who was part of the team who discovered the #Ebola virus

With this momentum donor agencies and research funding institutions must go beyond their statements and ensure representation and inclusion in leadership. @wellcometrust @gatesfoundation @NIH @DFID_UK
Here’s a good article thar explains how to do so: https://www.devex.com/news/opinion-we-must-translate-anti-racism-statements-into-action-97591

And close to my heart: age old research practices and publishing norms are being exposed, questioned, and challenges. This brilliant satirical piece “How (not) to write about #globalhealth” unfortunately resonates deeply with so many of us :

And some of the most prestigious scientific publishing houses are giving space to these issues. @GlobalHealthBMJ is leading the way! But @TheLancet @NEJM @nature @NatureMedicine have all had some important and probably controversial articles that attack inequity in #globalhealth
As well as development outlets like @NPRGoatsandSoda @devex @ThinkGlobalHlth @ConversationUK @TC_Africa
Though special shout out to @devex and @amrutabyatnal for digging deep and being committed to following the #DGH beat. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.devex.com/news/video-what-will-it-take-to-decolonize-global-health-97721/amp

There’s a lot happening in this space. There are heavy structures of discrimination on a foundation of colonial history & power imbalances.
But the fight is worth it.
Global #publichealth is for the #global good. We need #equity & #inclusion now more than ever.
