#equalpayday today. Full time working women in Australia earn 14% less than full time working men.
There’s a lot we can do about the #genderpaygap. Here’s a start. 1. Better value the work done in highly feminised occupations. Workers in the health and care professions perform enormously skilled and economically important work. They are underpaid. #paythemmore 1/
2. Organisation leaders should undertake a gender pay #audit to diagnose #genderpaygap drivers. @wgea has great resources for this. Because this is such a pervasive problem, there will be issues, be open to that and #actonthedata 2/
3. Male dominated jobs tend to have lower (note: not no) #genderpaygaps. What is your organisation or profession doing to open access & careers for women in non trad areas? This is not only about getting women ‘in the pipeline’ but addressing sexism & culture #equalpayday
4. We need a #genderlens on everything we do in pay. Ask: how does this impact on women differently, what is the impact in gendered outcomes? This applies to #pay, #recruitment, #promotion criteria (and importantly how we respond in recession, eg #Redundancy) #equalpayday
5. Fix the mess that is #childcare. Families need access to high #quality, #accessible and #affordable care. If we don’t have this women have even more constrained choices in work and are square out of employment or into lower paid jobs (so they can care for kids). #equalpayday
6. Increase the supply of jobs which are #flexible but also high quality and that match women’s skills. There are benefits here for #pay, retaining key skills and workers and boosting productivity #equalpayday
7. Men need to do more at home in caring for kids and domestic work. The pandemic has exacerbated the #gendergap in unpaid work. @BrenChurchill’s research shows that an already wide gap has gotten worse in #Covid. #equalpay starts with equal unpaid work at home #equalpayday
8. We need women leading in government, business and unions. Facilitating access to senior roles both closes the #genderpaygap and changes the #pay agenda. What is your organisation doing about this? #equalpayday
9. While there is still some #genderpaygapdenial it’s important to note that women (who experience this) are more aware of gaps and sexism at work than are male colleagues, we’ve demonstrated this in our @Sydney_Uni research.
10. In good news we have the best educated prime age female labour force👩🏽‍🎓 in the @oecd and young women are excited about long and rewarding careers (we’ve shown this in our @Sydney_Uni research). Making change is good for women, families and the economy. Enjoy #equalpayday 🤓
And for my #sledgers following along at home, this is for you 🤓😄👇🏽, have a lovely day boys
