An excellent article from @FT on the drivers behind rising infections and falling mortality, highlighting the improvement in hospitals. I& #39;ve been reporting on this trend for some time now, and there& #39;s been more improvement since my last update. 1/4 https://www.ft.com/content/c011e214-fb95-4a64-b23c-2bd87ebb29d7">https://www.ft.com/content/c...
From a peak of over 30%, the mortality rate is now around 10%, the recent wobbly line indicating less data, both admissions and deaths - a good sign! The rate has fallen by a further third since early June. ICU data shows the improvement is across all ages. 2/4
Admissions haven& #39;t picked up either, despite the increase in infections. PHE sampling data on levels of community infectivity shows why - the increase is all at younger ages, who are much less likely to need hospitalisation. 3/4
But as this story reported today by @BBCNews shows, the young shouldn& #39;t throw caution to the wind. Eventually increasing infectivity will transfer to older age groups, as was seen in south and west USA with inevitable consequences for mortality. 4/4 ENDS #staysafe
