An excellent article from @FT on the drivers behind rising infections and falling mortality, highlighting the improvement in hospitals. I've been reporting on this trend for some time now, and there's been more improvement since my last update. 1/4 https://www.ft.com/content/c011e214-fb95-4a64-b23c-2bd87ebb29d7
From a peak of over 30%, the mortality rate is now around 10%, the recent wobbly line indicating less data, both admissions and deaths - a good sign! The rate has fallen by a further third since early June. ICU data shows the improvement is across all ages. 2/4
Admissions haven't picked up either, despite the increase in infections. PHE sampling data on levels of community infectivity shows why - the increase is all at younger ages, who are much less likely to need hospitalisation. 3/4
But as this story reported today by @BBCNews shows, the young shouldn't throw caution to the wind. Eventually increasing infectivity will transfer to older age groups, as was seen in south and west USA with inevitable consequences for mortality. 4/4 ENDS #staysafe
