Realized I should disclaim that if I'm hurting emotionally/need support re something I tweet, I'll state that explicitly. Otherwise, assume it's shared out of a desire to bear witness and stand in solidarity w/lived experiences as disabled & chronically ill ppl. #NEISVoid
1/
I have the misfortune of having experienced medical trauma early enough to have developed a deep war chest of coping tools for instances of inexcusable behavior from providers.
2/
And it is pure luck that I also had just enough non-toxic support from loved ones and resources that those coping skills are largely constructive, not destructive.
3/
As a result the absolute onslaught of systemic, cultural, medical, physical, mental, emotional (and on and on) harm hurled my way tends to be labor inducing, but no longer personally traumatic.
4/
However, knowing how differently any particular process, social narrative, or adverse medical experience would land on me if I was newly ill, trusting/unquestioning of medical authority, alone, and unfamiliar with healthcare/insurance *always* gets my ire up.
5/
I don't want anyone to have to develop the skills I have in the way I did. I wish there was a beacon that alerted the chronically ill community every time someone had the first of what might be many disastrous healthcare interactions so we could dispatch a responder.
6/
Whatever spare capacity my coping skills afford me I am honored to devote to lessening the chance that others will experience medical trauma, and if/when they do that they won't do it alone. ❤
