You don’t have to have a career plan. You can bounce around, checking out the landscape. It’s completely up to you. You may be doing your job, taking every day as it comes, and one day think
“It’s my life. It’s my time & energy I’m spending on these “bounce- around” jobs. Why don’t I decide what I really want to do? Why don’t I find something that will give me more than just a paycheck? It’s kind of scary to think about doing that. I still have a voice in my head...”
“...that says ‘Who are you to decide what kind of work you deserve? You are no one special. You should forget about this career vision thing and just be grateful you have a job at all.’”
You can notice the voice, and speak to it. You can say,
“I appreciate you looking out for me. You don’t want me to get hurt. You don’t want me to shoot for something I might not achieve. I appreciate your concern very much. I am a different person now. I know myself better. I understand the world better.”
“I’m going to spend some time thinking about what I want to do professionally. I’m going to aim to get more from my job than just the rent. I’m going to look for a job that grows my flame. It’s a process. I know it’s not an equation to solve.”
It takes guts to begin that exploration, especially if we were taught as kids not to get above our raisin’ or taught that all jobs necessarily suck
It takes guts to begin that exploration when predatory capitalism is everywhere.
But what if you could get more out of your job than you’re getting now? What if you could use more of your talent, more of your creativity and more of your heart?
