THREAD: Has there ever been a recession, pandemic, and riots in an election year. Yes! Twice. And 4 times we've seen a pandemic & recession in an election year.

In 1820, James Monroe faced the Panic of 1819 (Recession) and a Yellow Fever Epidemic.
And despite all the trials that Monroe faced in 1820, Monroe was such a strong Incumbent that he ended up running unopposed in the general election.

In 1836, the Jackson Administration had been dealing with the Cholera pandemic for 4 years. His VP Van Buren was running for POTUS
The Jackson/Van Buren administration were dealing with a recession and cholera pandemic, but also riots in Ohio. Nevertheless, Van Buren still won a 3rd term in the WH for his party. Van Buren won 170 EVs to Harrison's 73. Van Buren won nationally by 14.2 pts w/50.8% of the vote
In 1900, William McKinley faced a recession, a Bubonic Plague epidemic, and race riots in Ohio & New Orleans where buildings were burned and people killed.
McKinley won re-election with 292 electoral votes and 28 states. McKinley defeated Bryan by 6.1 pts nationally w/51.6%.
In 1924, Calvin Coolidge faced a recession, both a smallpox epidemic and pneumonic plague epidemic, as well as the fallout from the Teapot Dome scandal (Watergate before watergate). Coolidge won reelection with 382 EVs & beat Davis by 25.2 points nationally with 54% of the vote.
