I would actually love to have a sincere conversation about this because I think about it a lot. https://twitter.com/TitaniaMcGrath/status/1293556090895032322
Like, this thread is satirical, and it's taking direct aim at people who are poorly served by healthcare.

But actually, painting people who are poorly served by healthcare as anti-science conspiracy theorists is kind of a huge problem?
A lot of multiply marginalized people are:

- doubted & stereotyped by doctors
- underrepresented in medical research
- survivors of med abuse/trauma

and so yes, actually, medical science is informed by the same systemic issues as every other part of our culture.
Our healthcare system absolutely does not prioritize patient autonomy.

People are regularly coerced into actively harmful treatment protocols because, for example, doctors may not believe patients when they report previous bad reactions to medication. https://twitter.com/bennessb/status/1226122510900572161?s=19

We also *do* medicalize non-normative bodies in harmful ways.

How often do people end up much sicker after trying to fix a relatively benign problem?

Weight, sleep, flexibility & stamina are all given fictional ideal ranges, when some diversity here is pretty normal?
One of the impacts of this is that if you're getting along relatively well on 12 hours of sleep a night because you feel pretty great during the other 12 hours, everybody will tell you that you need to fix this all the time?

But maybe there is just a diversity of sleep needs?
And medical science actually... doesn't have a good handle on this?

Maybe you have sleep apnea or narcolepsy and will discover treatment options that change your sleep:wake ratio.

Or maybe you will be dx'ed with depression or idiopathic hypersomnia with no change in sleep need.
And maybe you have lived in your own proprietary haunted body for decades and you have decided which experiences you want to accept and which experiences you want medical help with.

And, given the well documented limitations of medical science, this is a very rational position.
But, when you try to explain this to somebody who hasn't been through it themselves, what they hear is the quoted thread.

What they hear is a rejection of every medical benefit & advancement.

It's exhausting.
Update:

My reaction is honestly the same, because this thread exaggerates some things and minimizes other things in a way that is really not related to reality and is worth discussing. https://twitter.com/lollipop_bandit/status/1293922976191012864?s=19
