You’ll never convince me that NZ is some kind of hellhole. This is somewhat selfish, but I have a great life and a real shot at providing an even better one for my kids. My ancestors in the old country never had that. We should fight injustice but I’m not jeopardising that.
And that’s always going to be my first imperative in how I see politics. There nothing you can say or do that will make me budge from my first priority of wanting my children to have a life as good or better than mine. And most people feel that way. It’s human nature.
And just to be clear, when I say my children I expressly mean “my children” and not the abstract idea of all future generations. So realistically, any argument for transformation needs to account for that and make it completely clear that’s secure.
