*How I use self-marking quizzes like Microsoft/Google Forms in English*

A short THREAD about how I’ve been using these for homework, with lots of actual, classroom examples. These can be completed multiple times and copied across classes. And they require *zero marking* /1
Using poetry as an example but this can be replicated with any text, I always begin with a small section on plot and tend to use MCQ for this. The number of questions will tend to vary but this is usually quite short. /2
I then move onto a more substantial section, which will usually be fill in the gap for key quotations. I’ll usually include about 10 quotations and ask students to fill in the *entire quotation* and not just the missing word. /3
At this point, everything has been completely self-marking and I can see in a moment if there are any misconceptions I need to address. The students also get immediate feedback as to their own knowledge of the text. *BUT*... /4
...I wanted to find a way to make this kind of self marking quiz more generative and not just fill in the gap/MCQ. But I also still wanted it to be completely self marking and something the students could self-evaluate. I thought about this a while and came up with the below.../5
Next there’s a section where the students are provided with a key image from the text. They are asked to write down their analysis, anything at all they find interesting. There is no right answer awarded for this. Here’s what it looks like with instructions /6
So the students then fill in their response. When they submit it they’re provided with an exemplar response. The aim here is for them to ask themselves: did I make similar points? Did I miss anything? Did I write about it in the same way? /7
They can treat this just like a model response. The aim is *not* for them to learn the exemplar analysis, but to use it as a way to self-evaluate what they have just written. So instant feedback/zero marking. I can also see what students wrote and assess if I need to reteach /8
A couple of logistical points:

1. This is set as homework and can have a submission date
2. They can complete it multiple times and use as revision later on
3. I create a master version and then copy for the one I want to use for homework. This keeps responses organised
