i have read the harper's letter.

i still have no idea who it's for, what it hopes to accomplish, or how it intends to challenge current discourse.

And it doesn't help that some of the signatories have punched down and participated in massive social media pile-ons themselves.
One of those signatories, in particular, participated in a brigading that forced women who came forward about sexual harassment in the science fiction and fantasy community to lock down their accounts.
One of those signatories published, without bothering to read it beforehand, an article by a senator that called for military violence against protestors, which put his own journalist colleagues in danger.
One of those signatories has tens of millions of followers, a massive worldwide platform, is one of the richest and most famous people alive, and yet claims activists with mere hundreds of followers are bullying her.
So, you'll excuse the fuck out of me if I'm side-eyeing this letter and what it's supposed to accomplish beyond being signed by some of the biggest assholes on social media.
Also, Harper's is likely publishing this because two years ago a lot of us on social media called them out on not paying their interns and tried to pressure them to change policy, and here they are still with this horseshit:
