There is a deep, disturbing, would-be-funny-if-it-weren't-so-sad irony to Academic Medicine (the journal of the AAMC) selecting, for its INVITED commentary on the history of #womeninmedicine, a male physician.

1/
Now, the journal and author may have had the best intent. In addition to being a preeminent medical historian, he may be a fierce advocate for and mentor of women physicians. He could be the poster-child for #HeForShe in medicine. No idea; I don't know him.

However. 2/
... If you want to do more than just blow smoke about "the subtle but hurtful indignities (“microinequities”) experienced by women physicians," which, you can admit, in part explain why women "remain highly underrepresented in leadership positions in academic medicine,"... 3/
Maybe invite one of us to write our OWN freakin' history?!

Am I to believe this was the best they could do?

I mean, REALLY?! 4/
They could not find a SINGLE female medical historian to write this?
Not 1 identifiable senior female MD who has written on the topic before?
No available female scholar in medicine who could do the topic justice?
And the author had no female mentee he could recommend?
5/
I am so disappointed.

We will never achieve gender equity in medicine if those in charge of inviting authors (+speakers) do not realize that decisions like this are both tone deaf and, worse, a big part of problem they opine so eloquently, and so concernedly, about. /fin
