WHAT AGE SHOULD PARENTS GET THEIR CHILDREN MARRIED?

Imām Abū Ábdullāh Muĥammad al-Khaţīb al-Tabrīzī records in Mishkāt al-Maşābīĥ:

Narrated from Abū Saýīd and Ibn Ábbās, who both said, “RasūlAllāh ﷺ stated, ‘To him who is born a son should choose a good name for him, https://twitter.com/Abu_Fatima44/status/1275436501707288584

teach him good manners, then when he reaches puberty he should get married. For indeed, if he reaches puberty and has not got him married, then he commits a sin, then indeed his sin is upon his father.’”

Ĥakīm al-Ummah Muftī Aĥmad Yār Khān al-Ĥanafī al-Naýīmī writes in his commentary of Mishkāt al-Maşābīĥ named, Mirāt al-Manājīĥ, summarising from Mirqāt al-Mafatīĥ:

“This is when the son is poor and is not able to get married himself.

If the father is rich and is able to get his children married but does not do so due to negligence or because he is in search of a rich spouse, then the fault of the son's sin is upon the negligent father.”

It is also recorded in Mishkāt al-Maşābīĥ:

Úmar ibn al-Khaţţāb and Anas ibn Mālik from RasūlAllāh ﷺ, that he said, “It is written in the Tawrāh, ‘Whoever's daughter reaches twelve years, and does not get her married, then she commits a sin, then the sin of that is upon him.’”

Muftī Aĥmad Yār Khān comments under this:

“Meaning, if a man who meets the standard of Kufw is available and he can afford to marry his daughter but does not marry her due to negligence and in search of a rich man.

From this Ĥadīth it becomes known that if Allāh grants the ability to a father then he should get his daughter married before the age of twelve. These days, the women of twenty-five or thirty years of age remain unmarried in their homes.

They do not find rich graduates and do not get married. May Allāh open the eyes of Muslims.”

Regarding, “then the sin of that is upon him,” he writes:

“Meaning, the sin is also upon the father because he was the cause of it.”
