The ego can be a tricky one to explain. It’s a wile little bugger that sneaks in wearing a fake moustache and glasses so that you won’t recognise it. It tricks us into thinking it’s an ally.

It’s heart’s in the right place, it wants to keep us safe. It’s just a
little misguided; like an overbearing parent that pushes their child to do better, even though they already play 7 instruments, completed their maths A level two years early and are fluent in 11 languages. ‘Must do better,’ it whispers in our ear as we land our dream job,
‘They’ll figure out you’re not meant to be here, you big imposter,’ it’ll sneer.

The thing with the ego is that it can also have attended the Homer Simpson School of Parenting, which has ‘never try, never be disappointed’ on its school crest. ‘Don’t even bother,’ the little
goblin whispers, ‘What’s the point in trying? YOU’RE not going to win/get the job/land the part/sign the record deal against so many others.’
Why not? Someone has to?
‘Not you. You’ll embarrass yourself. Stay home.’

The same force can pull us in two opposing directions.
It makes it a slippery beast.

‘But surely this means you’re saying it’s wrong to have ambition?’ I protested a while back to my yoga teacher, concerned that this was some grand plan to keep the masses in their place, and never to strive.
‘Ah,’ he smiled, ‘that’s what the ego wants you to think.’

Ambition is no bad thing. We’re always evolving and moving forward. When your driving factor comes from a place of comparison, be that striving to prove that you’re good enough, or refusing to try because you
believe you’re not good enough to succeed, that, my friend, is the ego at play. (My friend @lisa_luxford_1111 worded this beautifully and succinctly the other day, but can I remember her words to quote her? 🙈)

Catch it in action. Pull off it’s fake moustache and reveal
it for what it is - a naughty little goblin who thinks he knows best, but most certainly does not.
