Fellow white friends, acquiring books (music & movies & etc) by Black creators is great + you get so much cool art!- but it’s not the same as political action or fighting to make your workplaces, schools, & communities fair & inclusive.

Books = YAY
Action = NECESSARY
Consuming a wider selection of art & educating myself is a me-project.

Our self-help & self-improvement obsessed capitalistic culture has long told us that if we perfect ourselves, a better society would naturally follow.

Clearly this is not the case?
So books and movies and discussion groups, yes, and collecting racist relatives when we can, yes, AND holding our leaders accountable AND asking tough questions where we work and where our kids go to school AND fighting voter suppression.
I find images motivating, so, my fellow feminists:

Picture the mediocre-est dude you know wearing his This Is What A Feminist Looks Like shirt and explaining how he just discovered Gloria Steinem and explaining her to you, but then also debating whether your office is sexist?
Like he’s on about “Are you absolutely sure that [Obviously Sexist Person or Practice] *means* to be sexist?” i.e. “Sure, but what are we supposed to do if no qualified women apply or even exist?”

Feel that steam about to come out of your ears?

Yeah.
I’ve been groped and harassed and talked over by dudes with *excellent* bookshelves and probably so have you.

Reading is a you-project (and a me-project, this thread is for me, too).

It’s a step but it isn’t the fix.

& the fix isn’t primarily a *consumption* issue.
Alternate example from pre-pandemic times:

Reusable grocery bags vs. plastic = reduces waste! Yes! Good!

You personally using a reusable bag doesn’t mean the climate is fixed now, good job!

There’s other shit that needs moved, power structures that need to be upended.
And “I use reusable bags now” does not a climate justice expert make?

Thanks for reading, let’s keep supporting diverse creators & businesses, & let’s don’t mistake our personal education and enrichment for justice. ❤️
