Day 2 of #eLearnX with @EmpowerTeaching & @UtahStateCIDI: 3 building blocks to creating:
copy, transform, & combine.
1. How can we COPY elements of pedagogy?
2. How can we TRANSFORM them/adapt to fit our circumstances?
3. How can we COMBINE pedagogical practices & approaches?
This really resonates with me from yesterday's sessions. Good teaching not only involves the instructor, but an entire community of learners. We can learn from each other - sometimes borrowing resources entirely (but always CITING & giving credit) - and adapt to our courses.
With our transition to online/remote/blended learning this fall, it's not about reinventing the wheel. It's about optimizing resources & humanizing online learning environments ( https://bit.ly/2WM6yqC ). Make small changes to format, materials, & assessment.
While doing so, take the "Plus One" approach of UDL (Universal Design for Learning) advocated by @ThomasJTobin to reach all students. "Plus-one" thinking encourages us to address barriers to learning our students face & reduce or eliminate those barriers.
Some "best practices" w/ this: provide flexibility/choice in assessment; allow students to submit formative assessments in text or video; provide captions & transcripts for lectures; add formative quizzes. Don't have to do all of these, even just "plus one" makes a difference.
Another great resource from @UtahStateCIDI w/ the "Plus One" UDL approach: Workload Estimator.
Helps you calculate how long tasks will take. Great for helping students with time management & for instructors to set reasonable expectations. https://bit.ly/2XemIrM
