The rhetoric around furloughed workers is so radically different from that around disabled people. Imagine if the chancellor said 'noone wants to be on ESA, it's not their fault businesses won't accommodate their needs or they are too sick to leave their home.' #Chronicillness
'The chancellor rejected suggestions some people might get "addicted" to furlough if it was extended.' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52634759
Oh, so it's only disabled people who get addicted to being off work then? #MillionsMissing
"perverse interactions between the welfare state and human nature have encouraged claimants to pursue their self-interest & exploit the welfare system, while shirking their social obligations." Waddell & Aylward 2005, the scientific & conceptual basis of incapacity benefits,pg 45
'the traditional sick role can then become a trap, in which the patient continues (futile) attempts to find a medical solution and remains passively in the sick role awaiting 'cure', even when there is no medical reason for permanent incapacity' pg 47
yep that's me, passively awaiting a cure for my defective genes, & everyone else with #MECFS or similar conditions, futilely pursuing answers to our health issues. If only we weren't addicted to being out of work, we might suddenly discover we are actually healthy!
I'm tired, I have #EhlersDanlosSyndrome and a 5 month old baby. If this thread doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll try to clarify things after my nap #Chronicillness #Disability #pwme #MEAwarenessHour
