I advocate for #captions a lot.
I rely on them to consume #video & stay focused
Text equivalent for the audio of the video & any other sounds beside speech that help the audience understand the content, when there are not visual cues. For example a phone ringing or a door knock https://twitter.com/MSFTEnable/status/1254462801269096448
- There are 2 basic options:
a)Open Captions, which means that the audience can't turn them off. They are there at all time despite if you want them or not
b)Closed Captions (CC) means the audience has the choice if they want them appearing on the screen & can turn them on or off
A third option is #subtitles which are similar to captions, meaning they are text equivalent to audio but their difference is that the audience has access to a #translation in other language(s).
ex. Original dialogue is in English but subtitles offered are Greek, Spanish, Chinese
Personally I prefer #ClosedCaptions.
I like having the choice whether I want text equivalent offered appear on my screen.
Some video players, offer to the audience customization options, on how captions appear on screen.
Meaning you can choose font size/color/family & background
I like having options, the more the better.
We are different & consume content in various ways.
I don't like others choosing for me which is my optimal way of consuming content.
Even in the same day, if my eyes are tired, I can choose other settings that suit me more at that time
Provide options & the freedom of choice on customization.
Make any content via settings provided, as flexible as possible.
Providing various options, means that you care to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for many different people, interested to explore your work
There is a huge misconception on #captions benefiting only Deaf & Hard of Hearing
That was true 40+ years ago when they first appeared on TV. On the same mindset, text messages on mobile phones followed 20 years later.
Messages & captions on 2020 are mainstream serving all people
Best practices followed benefit us all, no matter if impairments are visible
I believe in providing options for people to choose from. How & why people use anything is private. Nobody needs to expose their medical record to get classified under a category. Respect people first
#AccessBarriers don't exist due to impairments.
They exist due to exclusive choices made designing services & products, to serve only specific audience.
It is part of a #culture not exclude marginalized groups of people
#inclusion is a choice, so is tolerance to #discrimination
#transcripts are also vital for #audio content.
They come along with #captions on #video content

There are easier to produce, because captions need to be synchronized to be accurate.
If transcript is not interactive, than you don't need to synchronize audio & text
