So. If we assume that Kim Jong-un is dead or dying (and we’ve no real evidence to prove one way or the other), who is there to fill his shoes? Allow me to speculate.
As North Korea is a hereditary dictatorship, the popular opinion in the West is Kim’s sister Kim Yo-jong, who is currently an alternate member of the Politburo. She’s Paektu bloodline and seems an obvious choice.
However, she’s seen as inexperienced, perhaps unreliable and prone to gaffes as the Trump photo demonstrates. Unless she’s been scooping up allies, she might find herself overlooked.
Kim’s older brother Kim Jong-chul (seen here in the dark glasses in London at an Eric Clapton concert) was initially preferred as an heir over Jong-un. He fell out of favour and is reportedly more interested in music than politics.
Kim’s uncle Kim Pyong-il. Strong Paektu bloodline- he’s the son of Kim Il-sung- and worked abroad as a diplomat for 40 years as he was seen as too much of a threat to Jong-il. Now retired back in Pyongyang, could be seen as a way of keeping the family in power.
Choe Ryong-hae. He’s not a Kim family member, but wields immense power as Kim’s second-in-command. One train of thought might be him acting as “regent” until an alternate Kim is ready.
But this can be nothing but idle speculation. As far as we know, Kim Jong-un is still alive, and years of watching North Korea teaches me never to second guess what they might do next. Situation normal, unless we hear otherwise.
As some of you clearly want the comedy answer, then it’s Big Sam Allardyce. Safe pair of hands in a relegation battle, and like the Supreme Leader always looks at home in a chip shop.
