I consider this the surrender position. We just give up on distancing, accept the fact that the virus is going to spread much faster, overload a hospital system that we& #39;ve been able to preserve so far, and kill a lot more people. Here& #39;s the problem: that will impoverish us too. https://twitter.com/ndrew_lawrence/status/1250582792972484610">https://twitter.com/ndrew_law...
I can understand the frustration that leads people to this place. But it also won& #39;t work if the purpose is economic. A huge number of people will still avoid going out in public - not just elderly or sick people. And businesses won& #39;t be able to make ends meet without customers.
And then when it spreads out of control, there will be pressure to shut everything down again. A re-closing wll shatter any remaining confidence that we can handle the pandemic or get the economy moving. But there IS a middle ground position that we should strive for.
Scott Gottlieb among others laid it out: mass testing and re-testing, isolate positives before they become symptomatic, and trace contacts as best as possible. Rearrange business spaces to encourage physical distancing. Push on for antiviral and other treatment until vaccine.
