Seems to be a real momentum gathering on line that it’s definitely time for change in education.... but where do we begin??? Here’s some thoughts....
1. Time to extend EYs principles to the age of 7. By principles I mean unique children, relationships and enabling environments. A curriculum with the prime areas, wellbeing and learning characteristics at the heart- where the more abstract learning is authentic and meaningful.
2. Revise Ks1 to be areas of learning and development not individual subjects... there was a lot of work around this pre the Tory government. Time to look at this work and build on it....maybe ks2 could eventually work this way too...
3. An end to high stakes testing... phonics screening and SATs. These are-despite what some may say-shaping our children’s educational experience. Instead a system of sampling, and teacher assessment.
4. A cross party group working with the sector to build the best education service in the world 0-19 and beyond. Policies and frameworks developed openly and in partnership. Not behind closed doors by the select few....
5. A complete rethink around Ofsted. They have a role to play- but have stepped well beyond their remit. Instead they should be working with the sector as supportive friends helping to make our system the best it can be for our children. Working in partnership-not dictating.
6. We need to develop our system by looking at what is working around the world, looking at the work of educational pioneers and their contemporaries and current research and thinking....
7. The plans to reform EYs need to be halted immediately, as well as the plan to baseline children. The “Getting it right” @_CREC literature review which has been handed to dfe needs to be looked at in great detail and be used to shape what comes next.
There needs to be a national period of transition when our schools reopen for all children. A time for children to say goodbye to the teachers they left before lockdown and a time to settle back into school life, build relationships and settle back into school life..
That’s my thoughts... what are yours??? Do you think it’s time for change?
