A story about bread (thread)

For those who don’t know, I have been low carb for a decade

But I was raised by my grandmother for most of my formative years

She was famous throughout central California for her Portuguese sweet bread

I was her “associate baker” growing up
She used to bake 20 lbs of bread at a time and donate it to her church for bake sales

Over the years it became so popular she had to make 40lbs at a time

People would line up hours early and it would sell out immediately

The community knew her as the sweet bread lady
But she also made bread for every holiday

Anytime family gathered her bread was always present

It was a family staple, but a ton of work to make and no one else ever undertook the task

Only grandma ever really made it (and by default me and one of my cousins who helped)
My daughter was fortunate enough for my grandmother to live long enough to know her (grandma passed at 98 yo) when my daughter was 9.

Grandma taught my daughter to make bread also (with my help as always)

So it passed generation to generation
I never truly appreciated it until after she passed away

Agter she passed I would make it with my daughter for holidays and it felt as if my grandmother was still there with us

Like she left something tangible that will always be with us
My son was born 7 months after my grandmother passed, so he never knew her

But he knows her bread, he has always loved it

My kids ask “can we make bisavo’s bread?”

(Great grandmas bread In Portuguese)
Normally we just make it for holidays

But we’ve not made it In over a year

And since we can’t be with family for Easter we were going to skip it this year

Butwe are going to make it anyway

So “bisavo” can be with my kids for Easter in a way
In all honesty, we don’t make it frequently because one batch comes out to 88 rolls and my kids don’t want to eat anything else

So if we make it, we give most of it away (to prevent my kids from binging on sweet bread)
I mention all of this because during this lockdown and time of social distancing I think sharing some more personal stories might be worthwhile

We are easentialy tasked with keeping one another company at distance, via social media
So this week, when we bake bread for Easter I’ll take some pics/ videos and share them with you all

So while I am and have been low carb for a decade, I will eat a sweet roll with my kids. (Years ago I would eat dozens of them per Baking...no wonder I was fat 😂)
I mention this to prepare you i case you are going to be triggered by me baking bread

Am I a low carb advocate? Yes, it’s how i feel and perform my best

Is my family low carb? No, they never have been

Do I normally eat bread or sweets? No
I eat very heavy animal foods hunter-gathereresque/ keto

I was strict carnivore for 7 months due to autoimmune issues which did resolve

I don’t care if people classify me as. or think I am a certain diet or any of that

I don’t care about titles
I also don’t think eating a home baked sweet roll with my kids is in any way going to negatively impact my health

All that said, if you have questions about any of this, or when I do post some inages, feel free to ask.
