Fitness in 21 Days: A thread.

This will be a log and rolling thread. I will keep it as simple as possible.

I assume you
- Do not workout regularly
- Find it difficult to stick to a routine
- You slack a lot when it comes to health and fitness.
Let me get this target of "21 days" straight.

Anyone who tells you get can "transform" yourself in 21 days or 3 months is taking your for a ride.

I have added "21 days" in the title coz that much time we have to establish "fit" and healthy habits
We will be focusing on habits not mood.

We will be focusing on building a system, not goals.

Goals fail, but systems get you there eventually. At last I can say in case of physical fitness.

Start ridiculously slow, build momentum - snowball effect.
To start a habit and make it stick you need to understand how habit loops form and work.

This is from Charles Duhigg's book.

You should understand habit is formed when there are

1. Trigger
2. Activity
3. Reward

You can read his book to understand these things in detail.
"Well, why do I need habit? Can't I just put some good death metal on, crank up the volume and workout?" you ask.

You can, but you won't last a couple of days for it will drain your

- will power
- leave you sore
- CNS will be whacked.

You need to be slow and steady to win this
In the book "Will Power: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength" the authors explain, will power is finite resource.

Every decision you take, whether big or small, your resource for the day depletes. This is why your mind and body tend to automate each regular activity -Habit
So the best way to start this fitness journey is to put a system in place, add incremental change, incorporate in daily life.

My friend @carygottheblues tells me he doesn't feel the day has ended without a workout. That in 6-7 months.

He lost 15 kg btw following simple systems.
Here's what you need to do today

- Pick a time of the day to workout when you usually feel the most energetic.

- Set an activity to be the trigger for your workout.

- Set a target of 5 min workout. If done, consider it a success and reward yourself. Not silly.
Reward is important. You can have your favorite food. Chocolate, ice-cream whatever. Counter intuitive, I know. But it make you stick routine.

After some days, you yourself will go for better alternatives.
One more thing. You need to be accountable to someone. That makes it so easy.

You can do one thing if you want. You can reply to the tweet saying you did. It'll help in continuity.

If you are too eager, I can make a google spread sheet to track. (I have vella time now)

There will be incremental changes in coming days.

So chill out. Devote 20 min a day for health.
