2010-2019 Strength & Conditioning Thoughts

Lesson 1
The right coaching situation boils down to 2 things:

1. A head coach that has definitively got your back

2. The resources to meet the expectations
Lesson 2

Make sure your family gets the best of you, not the rest of you. When you're home, BE HOME!
Lesson 3

Mentors are a career compass and will take you farther than any logo on a T-shirt ever will. Pick your circle wisely.

I wouldn't be where I am without @coachscholz and his mentorship. Thank you.
Lesson 4

Assess. Prioritize. Execute.
Lesson 5

Money is the most common thing in the world. Don't let it drive your career decisions.

Do what you love. Work your ass off every day and feel good about the person looking back in the mirror every night.

If you make a little cash, it is the icing on the cake.
Lesson 6

You aren't special.
Nobody owes you anything.
Work harder.
Lesson 7

There are many roads to Rome. You can win a national championship using Conjugate, Tier, Weightlifting etc.

Make sure your program is well thought out
Make sure your groups are organized
Coach your face off every day
Intent and Effort every rep
Lesson 8

Career advancement has nothing to do with "who you know."

The vast majority of the time, career advancement comes down to WHO KNOWS YOU and is willing to put their reputation on the line for you.
Lesson 9

When hiring, check these boxes:

High Character
High Work Ethic
High Care Factor
Hungry for Success
Driven

The most important of these is character. Don't bring in anyone who will embarrass the program or the department.
Lesson 10

Invest in yourself, it will pay compounding interest the rest of your life.

NEVER. STOP. LEARNING.
Lesson 11

Brilliance is in simplicity. Master the basics. Be the best in the world at what YOU do.
Lesson 12

Some of the best S&C coaches you've never heard of are absolutely CRUSHING it at the D2, D3, NAIA, HS & Private Sector.

Shout out to those quietly advancing the field out of the "spotlight"
Lesson 13

Great coaches know how to develop other coaches. Make sure your people are prepared to thrive in their next position.
Lesson 14

Hire female strength coaches.

1/2 the human population shouldn't be eliminated from your candidate pool because you have concerns about how players will respond.

If your players can't handle a strong female presence, you have a culture problem and it is your fault.
Lesson 15

Embrace the process. Love the grind.

Embrace the process. Love the grind.

Embrace the process. Love the grind.
Lesson 16

Your most valuable asset is your people. Take your time and make the right hires.

Once you've got them, INVEST in your people. Invest your time. Invest your knowledge. Invest your resources.
Lesson 17

Don't treat everybody the same. Treat them the way they deserve to be treated.

BUT

Never deviate from your standard.
Lesson 18

Make sure your weight room is "recruit ready" at all times.
Lesson 19

"If you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not point fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain’t you. You’re better than that."
Lesson 20

Be grateful to those who have given you an opportunity.

None of us would be where we are without somebody taking a chance on us at some point.

Never lose sight of that. Pay it forward.
