The Democrats’ greatest failing in 2016 was our complacency. We believed Trump’s grossly inappropriate behavior was so blindingly obvious that we’d just let him hang himself. And most of the polls confirmed this.
But we have learned A LOT about the GOP in the 3 years since then.

Trump supporters can be divided into roughly three categories:
1. They don’t believe that he’s a lying racist idiot
2. They don’t care that he’s a lying racist idiot
3. They actively prefer that he’s a lying racist idiot
This was true in 2016, as it remains today.

1. THEY DON’T BELIEVE TRUMP’S A LYING RACIST IDIOT
These people are convinced that CNN, NYT, the WP, & everyone else is making up stories about Trump just to make him look bad. Their preferred media is driven by vindictive partisan spite; thus, all other media must be as well.

2. THEY DON’T CARE THAT TRUMP’S A LYING RACIST IDIOT
They see what we see. They may even believe some of it. But they can always find an excuse for continuing to support him (guns, abortion, taxes, SCOTUS) because they sincerely believe that any Democrat would be worse.

3. THEY ACTIVELY PREFER THAT TRUMP’S A LYING RACIST IDIOT
These are the “Deplorable” types we encounter mostly online. They’re enthusiastically on board with Trump’s immigration program, and love “pushing buttons” to further their goal of Triggering the Liberals.

We know things now that we didn’t fully grasp before, and maybe that can help us in 2020.
I don’t know if we’ll ever figure out how to effectively squelch blatantly untrue MAGA propaganda, but if nothing else we now know not to take a single state for granted.
