How to spot a lousy “personal trainer” :

🚩 They don’t do any sort of assessment prior to the commencement of your training program. No health history data collected, no movement pattern analysis, inquisition of your goals, injury history, training preference....
The list is long and it varies from client to client, but think about it, can personal training be personal if they don’t know anything about you? 🤔

The analysis is different for every client because we are all different. But, an assessment has to be done.
🚩 They speak only in absolutes without giving a comprehensive explaination behind what they are saying.... “Women should NEVER lift heavy weights.” .. “You “HAVE TO” do cardio daily to lose fat”...

When you ask why, they say “..because I said so..”
🚩 A trainer who doesn’t monitor your form & technique as you exercise. Nothing pisses me off more than paying your hard earned cash to get trained only for them to be on their phone the entire time / busy chatting & laughing with random people at the gym / ....
/ even for them to walk away during your training set and come back when you’re done. You’re paying good money for the 30–60 minutes you’re working with a trainer. You should have their undivided attention for the entire session. Yes, social media is a powerful tool for...
a PT business, Maybe your trainer will even post a picture or video of you exercising (with ur permission, of course). But if they’re texting or scrolling through IG / Twitter, answering & making calls while you’re wondering if you’re doing the workout correctly, find a new PT.
🚩 Trainers who constantly shame you. “you’re so fat.” ... “your body moves like crap” .... “how can’t you lift that 10kg Dumbbell ?!” .... “you can’t be that weak”...

Even if you do want to give criticism, all fitness professionals KNOW how to deliver it (sandwich method)...
without making the other person feel “less than” or if something is wrong with them. Instead of “LoL your core is so weak I’m so shocked!” ... a good trainer will say “We want to improve your core strength so your lower back doesn’t take over when you squat and deadlift.” Yk?
🚩 A trainer who solely relies on textbook knowledge and not their experience. If you’re into PT you know experience tramps a certification any day, anyone can read and get certified / a degree if they want. But vitu kwa ground ni different...
What they don’t tell you is that every single client comes with their own special needs, which the textbook won’t necessarily provide you with the expertise to maneuver, but your experience from your own training & training others & watching your mentors train others, will.
That’s not to say the knowledge from books isn’t important, it’s just the base level. A person who is certified and has never trained before has less power than a person who’s been training for 10 years and has the book knowledge as well. Every single client is different.
🚩 A trainer who brags about how hard their workouts are. Sad, because this happens a lot. Yes it’s hard, but hard doesn’t always equate to effective when you factor in other training variables. A trainer who makes you train to the max 5 days straight, doesn’t care...
about you, your body’s functionality and health, your recovery, etc. those vomit-inducing workouts are often not sustainable, which means you’ll be back to square one sooner than you think.

Work with a trainer who has knowledge revolving around program mechanics.
🚩 A trainer who exceeds their scope of practice. You can’t be a trainer & offer physio to a client because you watched a YT video about “how to treat patellatendinitis” same way a PT is not a nutritionist, UNLESS they have papers to prove for it.
The list is so long but please guys, if you have your doubts you can ALWAYS request for papers to prove their validity.

You can also feel free to walk away from a PT if they don’t deliver. There’s no problem with that. This is your HEALTH & BODY at the end of the day.
