So I've been watching all of the Three Stooges Columbia shorts in order, and having gotten through a little more than the first year (1934-1935), I've noticed a couple things...
First, they're still hilarious. Yes, many of the jokes are Moe finding new ways to slap Curley, but there's a lot of clever wordplay that doesn't get brought up as much when people talk about the Stooges.
Second, I never noticed as a kid how much a product of the depression these shorts were. The Stooges are always broke and looking for work and they almost always fuck with rich people. And the rich people are inevitably made to look dumber than the Stooges.
Third, and this was the big one, cops are basically never sympathetic figures in Stooges shorts. Sometimes the Stooges play private detectives, but regular cops are always the enemy and always get fucked with by Moe and company.
