Regardless of the result, I had a great experience being a candidate and campaigning for P112 Kuala Langat. Think enough time has past I can start looking back with smiles and share some candid BTS photos. Since there is a first time for everything, here goes: "ini thread"
This was morning of nomination. I've never been most skilled at sampin, culminating in the legendary sampin terbalik facepalm moment in 2014 when I wore Umno sampin (and hence the logo) in reverse. After 15 mins I finally got into car.
What few people knew, I almost did the unthinkable. Left my IC and papers elsewhere. So when we arrived outside dewan I had to put brave face on whilst my colleagues scrambled to get those items in time for the walk in at 9. In hindsight, maybe should've.. (jokes) 😅 [to be cont]
This was speech to machinery after the nomination. Spirits were high across the room. I wasn't sure what to expect for the next 11 days but I knew was gonna be hard work going up against senior national PKR figure and doctor from PAS who was well known in area.
Had fair share of selfies, and earned a dubious "jambu" epithet. In hindsight, although there might have been some excitement about my candidacy, there were signs that beyond the immediate BN core supporters, many of the same people who wanted photos weren't gonna vote for me.
Days were long. Starting at Subuh and ending at 2 or 3am everyday. Once I got going, genuinely enjoyed the moments meeting with voters. The warmth I felt from people was real. Kept me going despite keeping the zombie hours.
In many ways the real heroes were the local machinery based in their cawangans that tried to create a wave around the candidates. Posters and flags may seem like an obsolete method to urban sensibilities but in a place like Kuala Langat I think they still play a role.
Some of such posters and banners were er.. vandalised but eh, wouldn't have made a difference. It's politics and passions run high. Found it amusing more than anything else. It is what it is.
This was one of the more interesting attempts at discrediting. #humblebrag #sempat
Was lucky to also get a lot of support from outside the bahagian. Can't thank everyone enough. The parentals, wife, and the boss all chipped in. Still can't believe he actually wore shirt with my face on it. Don't know if he or I was more embarrassed. Fun times.
One of the biggest events I attended was a rally of sorts with almost 3000 Indian voters. Local MIC Youth guy was a real trooper and really helped. I probably only got 10% of the votes tho. Lel.
Voted for myself early in the morning. Weird feeling. Second photos says it all. Guy ahead of me in q didn't really wanna chat and the sign above now seems prophetic, all things considered. Ha.
I misread the banner here and thought it said "Hanya pengundi atau orang-orang dibenarkan memasuki kawasan ini". I recall telling my colleague "SPR risau monyet mengundi ke" and rushed to pose for photo. Turns out it wasn't the only thing we misread. Dush.
Don't have photos of exactly when we found out we lost but these were some from that night. Obviously everyone involved was shattered and we all shed tears. I kept most of mine for when I was alone. At first we were oblivious to the nationwide tsunami since so tunnel-visioned.
Then after a while as results trickled in we realised this was seismic. In some ways I very quickly suspended my own agony as we got concerned for colleagues around the country. The rest is history.
I'll reserve my full analysis of GE14 for another day. But as I said that night, am proud of the campaign. Results may not show, but I believe we ran em close in other ways. As for the future, I honestly don't know what's in store for me.
I said on @501Awani & @BloombergTV we now have to figure out what we stand for, & it cannot be overly racialist. Must be values-based. If party members/leaders insist on retreating to a neoconservative reactionary Malay purist posturing because that's safe haven, OK, good luck.
I wonder if I'd do well as TV pundit critiquing erbady. Or could try do PhD - in my delusional moments, always fancied myself as rockstar professor type. Or could try hand at starting Radiohead cover band. Thoughts?
