#Otd 1895: Libel trial instigated by #OscarWilde began, resulting in his imprisonment for gross indecency. Wilde had Marquess of Queensberry(father of his lover) prosecuted for criminal libel for saying he was a sodomite! But trial unearthed evidence that led to HIS arrest!

Watched 'The Happy Prince' (2018), mainly about last 3 years of #OscarWilde's life, after release from prison. In exile in France & Italy, took name "Sebastian Melmoth". Written/directed by & starring Rupert Everett. Sad story. 4/5 but I'd rate it 18.

#Otd 1897: #OscarWilde released from Reading Gaol. Sent 1st to Pentonville, then to Wandsworth & then to Reading. Departed for France where he settled in Berneval-le-Grand on N coast. Wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol there. Published under C.3.3. (cell block C, landing 3, cell 3)

#Otd 1895: #OscarWilde convicted in Old Bailey of gross indecency. Sentenced to 2 years hard labour (until 18 May 1897). Many hours of walking treadmill & picking oakum (separating the fibres in scraps of old navy ropes). Allowed to read only the Bible & The Pilgrim's Progress.
