Since the theme of the week is “Magic Shop,” the time has come to talk about Jimin’s magic knees.👏🏻👏🏻

Jimin’s coordination is outstanding, especially when it comes to moving body parts in opposition to each other. He can isolate his neck from his chest from his arms from his legs. And he can work them all at once to create some pretty fantastic illusions.

Jimin’s especially good at isolating his knees in the middle of other complicated movements to create an almost wobble effect - they look loose and detached, creating the illusion that they are independent from the rest of his body.

In 3:33, his legs are reaching out and in on each step, but his knees are ALSO moving out and in at the same time, furthering the complexity of the movement.

He even tends to add a bit of a jump/push to his steps to make his knees not only isolate horizontally, but vertically too.

In this step in Own It, he does a relatively simple heel toe step, but the way he leans into his knees and then shuffles them in and out adds a layer of difficulty and creates a stunning visual effect, especially when he does it with so much ease.

Watch how Jimin uses his right knee here, turning it in then out as he continually steps forward. His left leg meanwhile stays straight and though he puts weight on it, he stays leaning back to create the illusion he doesn’t.

Now look how the move looks when you can’t see his feet. Magic, right?

Jimin pulls off some similarly wacky knee and glide illusions during Baepsae when he’s really having fun.

This move is a perfect example of how Jimin uses his previous contemporary training to enhance his hip hop techniques. Notice how loose his legs are in his hip sockets and how wide he spreads his knees - that’s turnout.

The move itself is similar to the butterfly step, where you stay on the balls of your feet as you bring your knees together and then back out again, while bringing your pelvis forward. The butterfly typically stays in one spot, however.

It’s difficult to find full-body footage of this move, but it looks like he is again just stepping sideways. What creates the illusion of a glide is him keeping his weight back on his pelvis and working his knees in and out as he steps.

The way he executes the move though makes it look like he’s on a conveyor belt when you can’t see his feet. Those knees trick the eye every time! @_@

Keep a close eye on this little trickster - who knows what he will get up to next!
