hi it's 11:19pm in here right now and i wanna talk about yuna
this. this amazing woman who's always been a huge inspiration for me has been under a lot of pressure for so long and im so glad that she finally feels free enough to skate again.
yuna skating at ATS is such a big deal after years of not skating in public eye. im so hyped about this comeback for her not only because i want to see her skate again, but because it symbolizes that she's finally feeling free from the overwhelming pressure that—
—a lot of people, even her own fans, put on her. it's so gratifying to see her on the ice again, doing what she loves the most and performing without anything binding her to the past.
during her career, there were people who often said that she didn't really look like she loved skating. it was disheartening to hear that as a fan; imagine how much more hurtful it was for yuna herself to hear that.
she worked so hard to improve and suffered as much injuries as everyone else did, yet people still said she doesn't love the sport.
i don't think a lot of you understand what she did to deserve the title “queen.” it wasn't just because of her medals or of her world records. she changed the way the world viewed figure skating.
in the 2010 olympics, yuna was young. she was 19, and so motivated that she “would die for gold.” it was her moment. and she delivered two perfect skates that set the standard for ladies' figure skating for the following seasons.
during the 2014 olympics, could i say the same? no. she was admittedly not herself at that time. to me, she seemed a little unhappy. she lost the thing she relied on at vancouver— motivation.
perfection is a curse. once you do something perfectly, everyone would expect you to do everything else in the same way. that was the pressure on her: to be perfect, to live up to the title she was given— the queen.
she skated cleanly at sochi. but even to me, it seemed cold. do i think she deserved the gold? no, maybe, definitely— but my opinion doesn't matter. what matters is what she said after it: “i'm just glad it's over.”
that single statement speaks volumes of how she was feeling. it sounded like she wasn't there for herself, but for the people who wanted to see her there. she was probably so tired of the pressure that she just wanted it to end.
and now, to see her skating again— it's an honor. it's so fulfilling to know that yuna has let go of the pressure and doubt that kept her away from doing what she loves and im just very happy to be able to witness it.
(i spoke too much.) i just wanted to say: it gets better. things will be different years from now, and it'll be for the better, i promise.
