History Lesson for the Day:

In context of Watergate scandal, Operation Gemstone was a proposed series of clandestine acts, including plans to kidnap particular "radical" leaders who might cause trouble at the RNC Convention & hold them in MEXICO(?!!) until after it was over.
John Dean: Liddy laid out a million dollar plan that was the most incredible thing I have ever laid my eyes on: all in codes & involved black bag operations, kidnapping, providing PROSTITUTES to WEAKEN the opposition, bugging, uh, mugging teams. It was just an incredible thing.
Gordon Liddy was architect of plan & first met with then-Attorney General John Mitchell on January 27, 1972 to describe his plans to disrupt the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach, FL & to prevent any disruption of the upcoming Republican National Convention.
John Mitchell is everything Trump hoped Jeff Sessions could have been:

"Near the beginning of his admin, Nixon ordered Mitchell to go slow on desegregation of schools in the South as part of Nixon's "Southern Strategy," which focused on gaining support from Southern voters."
Nixon & Mitchell met in the early 1960s when Nixon joined a municipal bond law firm in NY where Michell worked. The two men became friends.

Nixon asked Mitchell to be his Campaign Manager for his 1968 Presidential Campaign.
After Nixon won the presidency, he nominated Mitchell as his Attorney General & made an UNPRECEDENTED request to then-FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to NOT conduct a background investigation into Mitchell.

Hoover complied.

And we wonder how we got to where we are today, right?
Mitchell was instrumental in thwarting President Johnson's peace talks he was trying to get established with Vietnam months before the 1968 presidential election. The talks were about an agreement to END THE WAR & most suredly would have given the win to the Democrats.
According Clark M. Clifford with Richard C. Holbrooke in the book, Counsel to the President: A Memoir, “It was not difficult for Ambassador Diem to pass information to Anna Chennault, who was in contact with John Mitchell, she said later, ‘at least once a day.’”
Chennault: ‘The only people who knew about the whole operation were Nixon, Mitchell & John Tower [senator from Texas]. But they knew what I was doing. Anyone who knows about these thing knows I was getting orders to do these thing. I couldn’t do anything without instructions."
